What is Nolvadex?

Nolvadex is a SERM (selective estrogen receptor modulator) drug. It contains tamoxifen which is dispensed as 10mg and 20mg oral tablets as well as a liquid.

What is Nolvadex used for?

Nolvadex is frequently used for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. Metastatic breast cancer means that the cancer has affected other parts of the body. Nolvadex is also prescribed to patients with breast cancer who have undergone surgery or radiation therapy. Nolvadex can often prevent breast cancer in women who are considered to be high risk.

How is Nolvadex taken?

Take Nolvadex as prescribed. This tablets should be taken orally, with or without food. Treatment with Nolvadex usually lasts for a period of 5 years, but this will depend on your doctor.

Doses higher than 20mg are usually split into two daily doses – one in the morning and one at night. Your doctor will decide on the right dose for you. For maximum benefit, each dose should be taken at the same time every day.

If you are using the liquid formula, you must use a proper measuring spoon to ensure that you are dispending the correct dose. Don’t use a kitchen spoon.

What if I miss a dose?

Ignore the missed dose and carry on with your usual schedule.

Does Nolvadex have side effects?

There have been no reports of serious side effects associated with Nolvadex. However, if you experience any unusual symptoms, speak to your doctor. Mild side effects include vomiting, nausea, and hot flashes.

Overdose with Nolvadex

An excess dose of all medications can have serious effects. If overdose with Nolvadex is suspected, seek urgent medical assistance. Symptoms of overdose may include tremors, unsteadiness, hyperactive reflexes, or dizziness.

Important facts about Nolvadex

If you are being treated for breast cancer with Nolvadex there may be an increase in pain when you first start taking this medication. This can be a good sign because it may mean that you are responding well to Nolvadex. However, you should report this to your doctor.

Nolvadex can be absorbed by the skin therefore pregnant women should not touch the tablets or breathe in any of the particles. This may put her unborn baby in danger.

If you are allergic to tamoxifen do not use Nolvadex. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any other substances.

If you are using Nolvadex to prevent breast cancer or if you have cancer of the milk ducts, you must tell you doctor if you have a history of strokes, or a blood clotting problem, or if you are taking a blood-thinning medication. In these cases, Nolvadex may not be suitable for you.

Before using Nolvadex, tell your doctor if you suffer with high blood pressure, if you smoke, if you have difficulty walking, or if you have high cholesterol, diabetes, liver disease, or cataracts.

Nolvadex should not be used during pregnancy as it may harm unborn babies. It is not known if Nolvadex affects breast milk, so if you are breastfeeding, speak to your doctor about the risks involved.

While using Nolvadex, women and men should use non-hormonal contraceptives. Speak to your doctor about these.
